Australian Rescuers’ Boots Show Radiation Exposure

The 8.9 magnitude earthquake that shook Japan last week continue to cause further damage to the country and fear to the rest of the world. As a result of the earthquake and the eventual tsunami, a nuclear plant was damaged. Radiation is said to be leaking from the plant and the rest of the world is threatened of exposure to this radiation. This has pushed several nations to send their men to join search-and-rescue operations in Japan.

Australia had sent four men along with New Zealanders to fly to Japan on board an American helicopter to provide aid at the damaged nuclear plant. However, two of the Australian rescuers were found to have traces of radiation in their boots as they reached the Fukushima airport. This was according to Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

The rescuers have already gone back to their respective bases. As a measure of controlling further damage, authorities are thinking about spraying water and boric acid over the nuclear plant.

Meanwhile, the International Atomic Energy Agency has advised the Prime Minister that health risks due to the exposure to radiation were very low.
