Meet Australian of the Year, Geoffrey Rush

Geoffrey Rush, a 60-year-old award winning actor and producer, has been named Australian of the Year. He was congratulated and given the award by no less than Prime Minister Julia Gillard outside the Parliament House in Canberra.

“Our population today is 22,812,617. I’m very proud to be one of that number. This is a great honour for a performing artist in theater and film. I feel sure that my colleagues will see this as an endorsement of our national story of creativity,” said Rush who was born in Toowoomba, west of Brisbane.

Rush first appeared in Hoodwink in 1981 and won an Oscar in 1996 for his film, shine. Among his more popular films are Pirates of the Caribbean, Munich, and The King’s Speech. Rush is also the ambassador for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and UNICEF Australia. He is also the patron of the Melbourne International Film Festival.

Other awards given were Young Australian of the Year that went to Marita Cheng, and Senior Australian of the Year that went to Laurie Baymarrwangga, an elderly from East Arnhem Land. Lynn Sawyers also received the award for Australia’s Local Hero of 2012 for her being a New South Wales foster parent.

A ceremony will be held tomorrow morning at Canberra for Rush and Cheng.

Cheng is into engineering and was born to Chinese parents. She particularly takes interest in robotics as she attends university in Melbourne.

A significant work of Ms. Baymarrwangga was that she donated what she received as back-payments from rent in order to build a turtle sanctuary in her estate.

Meanwhile, Ms. Sawyers has opened her Darby Falls home to more than 200 children. From this number, she usually accommodates about 6 children at a time in her house that she shares with her husband.
