What Every Customer Has to Know
Christmas is the season for giving. That is why there are so many people rushing about in malls and department stores looking for the best present they can give to family and friends. People take payday loans in order to supplement all the season’s expenses. This is also the same reason why many shops and stalls are putting up huge, red signs that say, “SALE”, out in their glass windows.
As soon as people buy the stuff they want and head home, they open the packages and get the worst surprise of their lives. This is when they realize that the thing they purchased is not actually what they had expected. What can be done about this? Is there any chance for the customer to return the item and have another one instead? Is it ever possible to get a refund?
This is one thing that people have to consider whenever they are out shopping for items. One wrong belief that people have is that customers cannot get a refund. This is absolutely not true. It is even not legal for stores to paste notices outside their windows of “no refunds”.
Customers and retailers share rights and responsibilities that they should know about, especially when it comes to refunds and exchanges. This is according to acting Premier, Andrew Fraser.
“Whether you are chasing a bargain or wanting to exchange some socks or a daggy shirt Santa put in the stocking, there are rules around refunds and exchanges,” he said.
“Both customers and businesses have their rights and responsibilities and it’s important everyone knows what the rules are,” he added.
For customers who want to have a refund for whatever reason, including a simple change of mind, they can always get a refund. Many stores or merchants actually allow this, regardless of the reason, also as an act of goodwill. And when this happens, the customer is refunded with what was used to pay. However, it is very obvious that no refund can be made for any customer who used a credit card for the purchase. Electronic transactions are just usually reversed.
“The best advice is hold on to your receipt and ask at the store if you have any questions,” said Mr. Fraser.
To better understand this, here are the instances where refund is to be made under the Australian Consumer Law.
- The product is not safe or is of no good quality.
- A customer will not buy anything that is faulty.
- The demonstration or product used for this purpose is not actually the same as the one purchased.
- The goods are not suitable for the purpose of the consumer.
