It is advisable to use anti-spyware and anti-virus software and firewalls that are updated.
It will also help if one avoids sending personal information through the internet. It is not a secure method of transmitting data. Furthermore, one must review credit card and bank account statements and check for unauthorized charges. Also, when confirming or changing personal information, do it over the phone using a registered number of the company and never use the email.
When there are emails that have links for downloads or attachments, never open these just like that. These may contain viruses that can weaken the computer’s security.
Whenever one receives spam emails or suspicious emails, forward these to spam@uce.gov. Also, forward this to the bank concerned or companies that are being impersonated.
